冬至 on the winter solstice…

仕事で北海道入り。
札幌は、昨晩から雪がしんしんと降り続いている。
雪は音を吸収するので、車の通る音も小さく静かだ。
１６時前だというのにもう空は暗い。
I’m in Sapporo now. Snow was been falling steadily since last night.
Snow absorbs sound. It is 16:00 and the sky turns dark, very quiet.
今日は冬至。
かぼちゃ餅のおやつをいただいた。
蒸してつぶしたかぼちゃに片栗粉、塩、砂糖を入れ、丸く平べったい形に整える。油をひいたフライパンで焼き色がつくまで焼く。
ストーブの上であぶって食べても美味しいんだって。
I ate squash-mochi on the the winter solstice today.
Steam a pumpkin and smash it. Add starch, salt, sugar and gather dough.
Heat a bit of cooking oil or butter in a frying pan and bake it.
